The diary of a Roots Rock record 2006

Around 5:00pm on the 20th of December word came in that Todd’s management wanted a new record delivered to them by Feb 20th 2006. The new private studio that had just been constructed a way’s off from his home and it was not yet outfitted with all the necessary equipment to record the new record. Furthermore the studio had never been broken in, not a single note had been recorded there. The race was on, no excuses the album had to be in managements hands by the 20th or the recording would have to be contracted out to a commercial studio. This is how Todd’s last albums were done and he was trying to increase creativity by removing the “clock on the wall, this is costing me how much” Syndrome.

Sean Henderson, Todd’s manager for all his personal and business affairs was now thrown into the whirl wind of getting a product down to Steve Wrench at Full Entertainment management company in Jacksonville Florida.

The first call was made to Chris Boudreau, who had produced Todd’s first two records and always worked very closely with him on songs and arrangements Chris’s response was “it’s got to be done when, I don’t think that’s possible”.

Todd and Chris had not spent much time together in the past 16 to 18 months, Todd had taken some time off from playing and recording to be with his new family of boys and build a new home and recording studio. The songs that Todd had written during this period Chris had not even heard yet. Over the course of the next 3 weeks equipment was coming in daily from various places, most of it used. Todd has always recorded on Tape, using a digital system would have been much easier but he would not relent “it’s got to be analog or nothing, no computers!” So a 2” 24 track Tascam recorder was brought in and set up.

The musicians were then lined up and Todd’s band came in, everyone cleaned their schedules and after many snags of flying parts in from California for the tape machine, rewiring some defective lines, locating lost reels of tape in shipping, recording of the songs began.

The end result was very rewarding everyone worked very, very hard and had a good time recording the new songs. The studio is very comfortable, it is not sterile or clinical and is very conductive for creating Todd’s sound of a Folk country/ Roots Rock style of sound.

Chris handled all of the producing efforts as well as a lot of guitar work. Peter Melanson Todd’s long time guitarist looked after most of the engineering as well as lead and slide guitar, and all the technical and various other things that go along with making a record were handled by Sean and Todd.

Mario Leblanc, Todd’s drummer for 10 years once again nailed all of the drums in one session and because of Todd’s huge dislike for click tracks one was not used. (Ask any drummer how difficult this is)

The girls, oh those sweet sounding girls, once again Chris and Todd stuck with what works. Kathy Collpits and Marcy Davis worked out on the new songs beautifully, and due to the fact they both were leaving the country the back grounds had to be accomplished in one session. The special guests brought in to do backgrounds on 17 Summers Ago and out-tro on Miles from Midnight were Lisa Boudreau (from Lost and Profound fame) and Stephanie Leblanc. Stephanie was about six months pregnant what a job these girls all did on a less than friendly schedule.

Troy McLaughlin, Danny maillet and Kim Dunn once again walked in and did their jobs extremely well and it was great to have them once again on another Todd Geldart record, these guys are top notch second to none players.

On Feb 17th 2006 Chris Boudreau walked through the door at the studio with 3 bottles of champagne and announced “It is finished.” Tracking of the first record at the newly dubbed True Sound Studio was completed.

Every year Todd does a special show for a “ladies only” evening this year was his 4th year for this event. This show is always booked a year in advance for the 19th and the album had to be in the hands of management in Jacksonville by the 20th, no exceptions in order to get to mixing on time. Todd refused to cancel the acoustic show and played unit 9:00pm for the fabulous crowd of 250 ladies, then packed up the reels of tape and drove 250 km to catch a plane for the 6000 km trip to Jacksonville Florida.

On Feb the 20th Todd, Sean and Chris landed in Jacksonville airport and then drove to St.Augustine to meet with legendary producer, mixer, engineer Jim Devito at Retrophonics studio. Jim mixed Todd’s last album and is a huge vintage gear guy as is Todd, Jim has worked with artist like Don Henley, Tom Petty and Creed to name but a small few. He mixed the new album and injected his influence on the producing of the record, he once again did a phenomenal job. Todd has always loved working with Jim, Todd considers Jimmy a friend and Without Jim’s help the new studio would not have been completed or work as well as it did, he guided the guys through a lot of technical things.

In St.augustine they had a lot of 12 to 14 hour days and didn’t have much time for play, but just working in such a beautiful town and great environment makes it worth it. When the final mix was completed the album was sent off to Joao Carvalho for mastering in Toronto Ontario Canada. This guy is one of the best and his mastering suite is world class all the way.

A very special thank you to all the people involved in every aspect of this new album from all the musicians to Todd’s family to the group of great guys in Florida, the people in Toronto and Sean for pulling all of these things so greatly together. This is not a formal thank you and there are people not mentioned here that are just as important, this is simply a diary of the events as they took place in the making of a new recording, in a new studio for a great artist.
